Thinking about painting a room? Selecting colors is a personal choice. Understanding the effects that certain colors have may help when making your decision. Paint is an affordable way to reinvent a space. Your personality and taste is a big part of the colors you choose, but as you think about your new project deside the room’s purpose and how color can function in that space. Does a small space need to feel larger or a large space need to feel cozy or intimate? Choosing the right colors can help.
Red is an exciting color! If you like to entertain it’s a great color for a dinning room or living room. It’s been known to stimulate conversation. Red can raise your blood pressure and speed respiration making this a less favorable color for a bedroom. Consider this color for an entrance if you want to create a strong statement. Avoid using it as the main color of a room. I recommend using it as an accent color. In a dimly lit room the color will appear muted giving it a more elegant look.
Yellow is a happy color. You see it frequently in kitchens. In an entrance, it’s welcoming and in a small space its expansive. Even though yellow is a sunny and happy color you will be surprised to know that it evokes anger and frustration. This color, though happy and energizing is the most fatiguing for our eyes. Try not to use it as a main color scheme. I recommend warmer tones of this color, somewhere in the honey family and it looks great paired with neutrals or greys in the “stone” family or even with soft blues. Try not to pair it with “citrusy” colors and definitely not in a nursery for its been shown that babies cry more in a yellow room!

Want to slow things down? Take a deep breath, and lets relax in a blue room. Blue is great in bedrooms and bathrooms, but keep in mind that Pastel Blue, which is a very pretty color, can give a space an uncomfortably cold feel to it. That is especially true if there’s not much “natural”light in that room. If the Pastel Blue is a must have and the sun doesn’t seem to create enough “natural” light, then warm up the space with warm tones in your fabrics and furniture. Want your guests to relax? Consider Blue for a family room. Used as the main color, try to go with softer shades to encourage calm effects. Stay away from dark Blue. It can make you feel sad. Not the effect you want to create in any space!

Time to unwind! Green is a color that works in any room. The calming effects of blue and the sunny feeling of yellow pair up to create the perfect combination! It’s helpful in creating a feeling of comfort and togetherness. Use it as a main color and it will evoke feelings of tranquility. Ahhhh that sounds nice! Are things a little hectic? Green helps relieve stress. Try it in a bedroom, aside from wanting a peaceful & tranquil place to settle, Green has been known to help with fertility. Hmmm!

Want Rich & Sophisticated? Try a Dark Purple. Not only is it a luxurious color, it evokes creativity. Add it as an accent to create depth. Want a softer Purple, perhaps Lavender? That’s such a pretty color and gives the same feeling as a soft Blue, but has a warmer feel to it.

Ready to work out? Jump in to an Orange room! Orange is an invigorating energizing color. It’s a great color for a gym or work out room. Orange is known for increasing energy. I probably wouldn’t recommend this to anyone as a good bedroom color.

Neutrals are basic and will never grow old. Just update your accessories, change the fabrics to add color or depth to a room and to give it a fresh new look. Use a great piece of Art work as a focal point in a room and use it as an inspiration when adding accents colors in your room.

Don’t forget your ceilings and trim. A lighter ceiling can give the feeling of height while a darker color on the ceiling can give the appearance of intimacy in a room that is enormous and has towering ceilings. Don’t forget your trim. Try to keep it uniform. It helps tie in all the rooms, especially those that flow from one room to the next.
